Meet Michael, a program participant who has transformed his life through ASLS's Community Integration Training and Employment Program.

Michael joined ASLS three years ago, seeking support to build independent living skills and find meaningful employment. Today, he works part-time at a local café, lives in his own apartment, and volunteers at community events—a testament to the power of comprehensive support and individual determination.

Starting the Journey

When Michael first came to ASLS, he faced challenges with social communication and had limited work experience. Through our Community Integration Training Program, he began developing essential life skills: budgeting, meal planning, using public transportation, and workplace communication.

"The training gave me confidence," Michael shares. "I learned that I could do things I never thought possible."

Building Skills Through Employment

Michael participated in our Employment & Volunteer Program, starting with on-site social enterprises at ASLS. He worked in our community garden and helped with facility maintenance, gaining hands-on experience in a supportive environment.

With guidance from job coaches and mentors, Michael developed professional skills and built his resume. After six months, he was ready to pursue community employment.

Achieving Independence

Today, Michael works 20 hours per week at a neighborhood café, where he's become a valued team member. His employer praises his reliability, positive attitude, and strong work ethic.

"Michael brings joy to our workplace," says his manager. "He's professional, hardworking, and our customers love him."

Beyond employment, Michael has achieved significant independence. He lives in his own apartment, manages his finances, uses public transportation confidently, and maintains an active social life through ASLS community activities and volunteer work.

Looking Forward

Michael's story exemplifies ASLS's mission: empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live independently and participate fully in their communities. His success inspires us and demonstrates what's possible with the right support, opportunities, and individual determination.

"ASLS changed my life," Michael reflects. "They believed in me and helped me believe in myself."

We're proud of Michael and all our program participants who work hard every day to achieve their goals and build meaningful lives.
